Cons of Living Abroad

I previously talked about the “pros” of living abroad, now it’s time for the bad stuff…

Apart from the travelling you get to do and the new cultures you get to experience, moving abroad and living as an expat has it bad sides, here are my top 5 [cons] of living abroad.

  1. Homesickness

HOMESICKNESS IS REAL PEOPLE. You don’t know how many times I’ve wanted to eat my Costa Rican food or be with my grandmothers back home. It’s all a process and the first few months are the hardest. You see all the differences from your country to the new one and it makes you nostalgic. (I will be posting more about this soon)

  1. Long distance is hard.

I’m not only talking about boyfriend\girlfriend relationships here; long distance takes up every type of relationship! Sometime I feel like my friends back home forget I exist, and it’s hard to keep up with all the friends you’ve made around the world. Social media is amazing and has helped me connect a lot more than before with all my friends, but not being there for a friend when they most need it is heartbreaking (or vice versa).

  1. You get sick a lot

This will definitely happen to you if you come to live in Africa (I’m not kidding) but it really does happen everywhere. Our bodies are used to a certain type of cuisine and water and air, and making a drastic change in the way you live, eat and sleep will make you sick or give you some type of infection. Just be really careful and get checked up by doctors every once in a while and you’ll be fine.

  1. Life at home goes on without you

This is one of the saddest things that happens when you live abroad. You miss out on a lot of things that happen to your family and friends. For example, when we lived in Cyprus my youngest cousin was born and I didn’t get to meet her until she was 2 years old, and now in Kenya, my best friends are in their senior year of high school and are gonna graduate without me. You never let go of those type of things, you just got to learn to live with them.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST!!!!!! The way people see you is ALWAYS based on what they’ve seen on the news or on the internet. Just because of telenovelas people think all Latin-Americans are crazy, chair throwing, shouting, human beings! People have the idea that Europeans are very quiet and mean, but some of the kindest and warmest people I’ve met are Europeans. AND THE LIST CAN GO ON!! (But I’ll keep that for a future post)

These are a few of the disadvantages that I’ve experiences while living abroad, hope it helps you get a better idea of what it’s like or I hope you get to relate to some of these things!

Love, Adri.
